What are marble and granite?
Granite is quite literally as old as the Earth. It is formed from liquid magma, the molten rock still found at the core of the planet, cooled slowly to form a substance approaching the hardness and durability of diamond. Granite is an igneous rock, the name reflecting its fiery beginnings. The chemical composition of granite is similar to that of lava. However, granite owes its hardness and density to the fact it has been solidified deep within the Earth, under great pressure.
Why use granite in your home?
Granite is very durable, heat resistant and its texture and look make it a feature of any room it is used in.
Where does the granite and marble come from?
Mainly from Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
Is granite expensive?
Creating the look you want in your new kitchen or bathroom is not without cost and marble and granite work tops do justice to the money they cost.
How do I keep my marble and granite work surfaces clean?
A lot of firms would like to sell you a specialist cleaning product when in reality all that is required is a normal non abrasive household cleaner. We would recommend using beeswax polish once a month in order to enhance the colour and shine of your product.
How often do I need to seal my stone?
If your product is marble or a porous granite then it would be advisable to seal it once a month, as a porous granite or marble can be stained by acidic substance such as wine, vinegar and lemon.
Do granite and marble tiles make for a cold floor?
In the Mediterranean, granite and marble floors are used to cool properties down. However they can be used in conjunction with under floor heating for added comfort.
Can I see a sample?
Yes, when you come to choose your ideal stone, samples will be available for you to see.
How quickly can you supply my work top?
From the day of templating, within ten working days.
What is the longest length of work top you can supply?
With a sink or hob cut out, we can supply a work top up to 2.5 metres and depending on access to the kitchen, without a cut out, surfaces can be longer. Island pieces may be any size within reason.
Do my units need extra strengthening?
This would be decided upon when templating takes place.
Are there different grades of granite?
Certain types of granite are brittle and soft in comparison to others. Marble is a a lot softer than granite so extra care needs to be taken.
Do I need new units?
Work tops can be fitted to most existing units.
How thick are the work tops?
Some people have 20mm worktops. The majority of worktops produced are 30mm. Worktops can be produced up to 40mm thick but any thicker, units will have difficulty bearing the weight.
Can I put hot pans on granite work tops?
It is not advisable to do this although granite can absorb some heat.
Can I scratch granite work tops?
Some types of granite are softer than others and can be scratched but not easily.
Can I chip granite work surfaces?
Yes, granite can be chipped. However, most types of granite nowadays can be repaired.
Can I have granite if I am on a budget?
Yes you can. We would supply a 20mm granite worktop.
